Looking to 2005
The last two Canada Cups have been impressive competitions. Next year, tentative interest has already been expressed by Germany and Korea to return to the event. The Koreans were unable to attend this year due only to a conflicting event hosted by Korea at almost the same time as Canada Cup. If these two teams come back on board, and if we can retain marquis teams like the Cubans and Iranians, the event will be fabulous.
The other thing which could serve to really help the event would be a higher U.S. presence at the event. The New York Athletic Club have done a great job carrying the U.S. colours the last two years, but for some reason this year the U.S. Women stayed away, possibly a pre-Olympic preparation conflict. Last year, U.S.A. sent several good women’s competitors to the event, so hopefully that can be regained, and if we can ever convince the U.S. it’s worth their while to send a few more of their top athletes, it could only help the event and the U.S. athletes for that matter.
Overall, though, the Canada Cup was a top event. In the space of two short years, the Guelph Wrestling Club has rehabilitated the event and returned it to a position as one of North America’s premiere showcases of International Wrestling. The future for the event seems bright indeed. With a little improvement in the area of pre-event promotion for the Cadet age event, including the addition of some more U.S. competitors, the Canada Cup under 18 division will join the Senior division as a truly great event.
If this is how great the Canada Cup can be in the Olympic year with many teams not traveling, I can’t wait for next year!
