The fencing competition took place Saturday, with the USA men and women facing off against the team from Korea. The event consisted of two rounds of a total of twelve individual matches for men and women, each match contested using one of the “tools of the trade”: epee, foil or saber.
In the first segment, the first two matches each ended in a tie; however, by the end of the fourth match, Korea had a three-point lead. In the fifth, the US started its comeback, with the USA’s Tim Morehouse – the 2004 National Saber Champion -- defeating En Seok Oh. The round ended with Sada Jacobson besting her Korean opponent Shin Mi Lee in saber, making the team score 51-44 USA.
Although the Koreans came within one point early in the second segment, two-time Olympian Felicia Zimmerman widened the lead to six points in her foil match, and the US fencers never looked back. In fact, team USA sweep all six matches in the second segment to win by the final score of 99-88.
